Gin & Tonic is perfect for summer but can work equally well in the winter. There are mild spicy notes to many brands with botanicals such as coriander seeds, cardamom, cassia bark and cinnamon adding flavour. However, a number of brands are really trying to warm the hearts of its drinkers.
Pickering’s Original 1947 is one such brand that is defiantly about spice. Closely based on an original recipe written down in 1947, Bombay. With botanicals such as cardamom, fennel, anise, cloves, cinnamon, lemon, lime - it’s an intense flavour of spice and sweetness. Anise tends to dominate but the spices and citrus still make it a smooth and well-balanced gin. If like me, you enjoy anise based spirits (Pernod and blackcurrant being one of my early favourites!) then this one is for you. Serve with ice, tonic and a wedge of orange.
Ophir Oriental Spiced Gin – both the name and bottle hints that this is a spicy gin and it doesn’t disappoint (although the spice is more subtle than with Pickering’s Original). Ophir contains a harmonious range of botanicals including juniper, coriander, angelica cardamom, grapefruit, cumin, ginger, tellicherry black pepper, orange, and cubeb). The result is a delicious taste of juniper, followed by pine notes and citrus; and then a warm, earthy spice. Serve with ice, tonic and orange or ginger. But if you are looking for additional warmth serve with Ginger Ale – delicious!
