Swedish Hernö Gin caught my attention recently when it was announced that it had won a Double Gold at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition. Hernö Gin has now been honoured with no less than 55 Master – and Gold medals from six of the world’s largest spirit competitions. From hundreds of entries only a few are crowned with a Double Gold making it one of the world’s best gins.
This is all a pretty remarkable achievement and clearly tells you that this is a quality gin.
It all started in 1999, when Jon Hillgren, founder and head distiller of Hernö Gin, first fell in love with gin whilst working as a bartender in London. During the years that followed his passion for the drink evolved into gin crafting and after plenty of research he finally founded the Hernö Gin Distillery in 2011. The distillery is located in the village of Dala, Northern Sweden – within the stunning UNESCO world heritage area called The High Coast.
Jon Hillgren, set out to achieve a fresh juniper driven gin with a clear lemon and floral profile – which it clearly is. It is made with eight botanicals; juniper, cassia, lemon peel, vanilla, coriander, lingon berries, black pepper and meadowsweet. All the ingredients used in Hernö Gin are organic. The production is all done by hand and each bottle is numbered.
